Yuan Shu is probably the least likable major character in the story. He is a self-centered lord in the Yuan clan, and he has some problems with the clan elders. Despite this, he has some pretty good generals serving him. Too bad that they get beaten again and again by Lu Bu, Guan Yu, and Liaoyuan Huo. However, Yuan Shu is the most open and honest person in the whole story. He does nothing to hide what he is really thinking, and that is what brings his downfall. You may not like Yuan Shu, but you gotta respect his ability to tell the truth about his intentions.
After seeing Yuan Shu in action, you would probably be glad to see him die. But even Yuan Shu is given a eulogy. His reflection on his way of living is so insightful, that I actually felt sorry for the guy. He just wanted to do what he thought was best. He didn't see any fault in what he was doing.
